Healthcare provision is energy intensive, and the NHS is one of the World’s largest organisations, and astonishingly accounts for 3% of the UK’s total emissions.
Back in 2009 the Sustainable Development Unit published the NHS Carbon Reduction Strategy for England.
In the strategy, NHS trusts were mandated to reduce emissions by:
10% by 2015
26% by 2020
80% by 2050
An update in 2012 projected savings in 2015 of 5.4%, representing a 4.6% shortfall.
Demand reduction strategies are key to reducing emissions in the NHS as well as low carbon technologies such as Combined Heating and Power (link to our CHP Bureau).
